January 1995 - The Centre de recherches mathématiques and
the Fields Institute are pleased to announce the winner of the
inaugural CRM-Fields prize for 1995: Professor H.S.M. Coxeter
of the University of Toronto.
H.S.M (Donald) Coxeter earned is BA in 1929 and his PhD in 1931
from Trinity College at the University of Cambridge. He led the
Canadian Mathematical Society and International Congress of Mathematicians,
and has received numerous honorary degrees.
Coxeter joined mathematics at UofT in 1936 where he was an active
member of the geometry seminar. He has been described by many
as a great geometer and has made contributions of fundamental
importance to the fields such as the theory of polytopes, non-Euclidean
geometry, discrete groups adn combinatorial theory.
As a CRM-Fields prize winner, Professor Coxeter will present
his lecture "Evolution of Coxeter-Dynkin Diagrams" in
the Fall..
