| MTCU
has recognized the importance to their training and higher education mission of
having a mathematics research institute in Ontario. The Government of Ontario
was among the founding agencies of Fields and has provided continuous funding
since 1992. The current renewal, commencing August 1, 2008, will cover the next
five years. It provides an increase in funding which complements the increased
NSERC funding which began April 1, 2008. In part, the MTCU funding will be used
to support an enhanced postdoctoral program, held both on-site and at the Principal
Sponsoring Universities - Carleton University, McMaster University, the University
of Ottawa, the University of Toronto, the University of Waterloo, the University
of Western Ontario, and York University. In
addition to the grants from MTCU and NSERC, Fields has received a generous donation
from Professor George Elliott of the University of Toronto. These funds are being
used to support the Operator Algebra thematic program and Distinguished Visitors
at Fields. Another new
program at Fields, the University of Toronto Dean's Distinguished Visitor Program,
will provide salary replacement funds to attract a prominent mathematics researcher
to join a Fields Institute thematic program each year for three years. The
Fields Institute, located in Toronto, is recognized as one of the world's leading
independent mathematical research institutions. With a wide array of pure, applied,
industrial, financial and educational programs, the Fields Institute attracts
over 1,000 visitors annually from every corner of the globe, to collaborate on
leading-edge research programs in the mathematical sciences. See www.fields.utoronto.ca
