Prizes and Honours

CRM-Fields-PIMS Prize

The CRM-Fields-PIMS prize is intended to be the premier mathematics prize in Canada. The winner receives a monetary award, and an invitation to present a lecture at each of the sponsoring institutes during the semester when the award is announced. The prize recognizes exceptional achievement in the mathematical sciences. It was established by the Centre de recherches mathematiques and the Fields Institute as the CRM-Fields prize in 1994. In 2005, PIMS became an equal partner. The name changed to the CRM-Fields-PIMS prize, the award level increased, and the terms of reference were revised. The winner is selected by a committee appointed by the three institutes.

The winner's research should have been conducted primarily in Canada or in affiliation with a Canadian university. The main selection criterion is outstanding contribution to the advancement of research. The nomination proposals deadline is November 1 each year.

Distinguished Lecture Series

Speakers selected for the Distinguished Lecture Series are asked to give three one-hour talks. One of these talks is designed for a general mathematical audience including graduate students and post-doctoral fellows. The other talks are of a more advanced nature and are often planned, in collaboration with the organizers of the current thematic program, with the participants of the program in mind. Proposals for this series are considered twice annually, October 15 and March 15.

Coxeter Lecture Series

The Coxeter Lecture Series brings a leading mathematician to the Institute to deliver a series of three lectures in the field of the current thematic program. The first of these lectures is intended for a general mathematical audience and the other two highlight recent important developments in the field of the program. The speaker is selected by the Institute's Scientific Advisory Panel on the recommendation of the organizing committee of the thematic program. In order for a Coxeter Lecture Series to be incorporated in the program, it must be at least three months in duration. Proposals for speakers are accepted twice annually, October 15 and March 15.

Distinguished Lecture Series in Statistical Science

This series was established in 2000. It takes place annually and consists of two lectures at the Fields Institute (one general, one specialized) by an internationally prominent statistical scientist. A nominating committee solicits nominations from the Canadian statistical community, and makes a recommendation to the Fields Scientific Advisory Panel which is responsible for the selection of speakers.

Fields Institute Fellows

This lifetime appointment is conferred on certain individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the Fields Institute, its programs, and to the Canadian mathematical community. It was created in 2002, in honour of the tenth anniversary of the Institute. Each year, the Board of Directors may choose to elect new Fields Institute Fellows. The announcement will be made at the Annual General Meeting held in June of each year.
